The Great “I AM”

A man who promotes himself as a preacher has written a book entitled “The Power of I Am,” but his book is not about The Great I AM who rules Heaven and earth but about man telling himself “I am strong,” I am beautiful,” “I am somebody,” to motivate oneself into feeling better about themselves. Taking the most Holy Name of God and applying it to humankind borders on blasphemy. It was Satan who said he wanted to be like the Most High in every way and was promptly cast out of Heaven, along with a third of the angels who agreed with his devious boast (Isaiah 14).

Abraham was the first to receive the introduction of The Great I AM when he was told “I AM the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees” (Genesis 15), but most remember it as Moses who encountered The Great “I AM THAT I AM” in the midst of the burning bush on the backside of the desert (Exodus 3). Fast forward to the New Testament where Jesus’ reveals Himself as The Great I AM who was willing to lay down His life for His sheep.

Jesus first met the Samaritan woman at the well who questioned His identity, perceiving that He was a prophet. She knew the Messiah was to come, and it was then “Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee AM He” (John 4). It was later while teaching in the Temple in Jerusalem Jesus made it very clear that He was and is The Great I AM.

Upon hearing Jesus declaring Himself the Light of the world, the Pharisees questioned who He was and who was His Father. Jesus answered them, “Ye neither know Me, nor my Father,” and tells them where He is going they cannot come. It is then He tells them, “Ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I AM, ye shall die in your sins. Then said they unto Him, Who art Thou?Having previously thought He spoke of killing Himself when He had told them they could not come where He was going, He foretold His death when He said, “When ye have lifted up the Son of Man, then shall ye know that I AM.” At the conclusion of their interaction with Him, “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM.” It was then they realized He was claiming to be God, the second Person of the Trinity. “Then took they up stones to cast at Him” and pursued His demise until He reached Calvary where His blood was shed for the remission of sin for all who will call upon His Name, (John 8; Romans 3).

The power of I AM was clearly seen in the Garden of Gethsemane before His death when those who came to arrest Jesus found themselves on the ground. When asked, “Whom seek ye? They answered Him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I AM…  As soon then as He had said unto them, I AM, they went backward, and fell to the ground.” He asked them again whom they sought and upon their reply He stated again, “I have told you that I AM, (John 18:1-8). The power of I AM is not in man, but in GOD. Jesus states in John 10:30, I and My Father are One.”
