Fulfilling the Law

It is universally known it is impossible to keep the Ten Commandments. Everyone tries to keep as many as they can but no one is able to keep them all. But Paul tells us in Romans 8:4, “That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” In other words, those who have trusted Christ as Savior have His Spirit dwelling within them making it able for them to fulfill all the Law.

Those who have become His children through the blood of Christ are adamant about having no other gods before Him; they do not bow down and worship graven images; they do not take the Lord’s name in vain; they joyfully worship on the Lord’s Day; they honor their parents; they do not murder; they do not commit adultery; they do not steal; they do not lie; they do not covet what others have, all doable by the power of the Spirit living within them. He is able to help us keep the whole Law. There are times we slip up because we still live in a fallen world but our hope, desire and discipline is to walk worthy of our calling (Colossians 1:10).

Those who live in the flesh and continue in their sin, rejecting the free offer of salvation that cost God His only Son, battle daily to live a moral life without God’s provision of the Holy Spirit to lead them and guide them, and give them the power they need to overcome their sinful behavior. They try to do as best they can to become better people but they know how futile it has become. The answer to their dilemma is just a prayer away, “Call upon the Name of the Lord and you shall be saved” (Romans 10:9-13). He is waiting for any who know of their need of the Savior to take a moment and open the door of their heart to allow His Spirit to enter and give them His power to fulfill all the Law and walk worthy of their calling.
