The Be Nots

You have heard of the “have” and the “have not’s” but have you considered the “be” and the “be not‘s” of Scripture? Many of the “be’s” are familiar such as “be fruitful and multiply,” “be holy as I Am holy,” “be kind one to another.” The “be not’s” are just as prevalent throughout Scripture. Just as “Thou shalt not” are commands to us from God, so are the “be not’s” sprinkled throughout Scripture; they are not just mere suggestions. All of God’s commands are for our benefit; to disobey them is sin. Although not exhaustive, here are several of God’s “Be not…”:

Be not wise in your own eyes” – Proverbs 3:7

Be not afraid of sudden fear” – Proverbs 3:25

Be not among winebibbers” – Proverbs 23:20

Be not rash with thy mouth” – Ecclesiastes 5:2

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry” – Ecclesiastes 7:9

Be not dismayed” – Isaiah 41:10

Be not proud” – Jeremiah 13:15

Be not as the hypocrites” – Matthew 6:16

Be not troubled” – Matthew 24:6

Be not deceived” – Luke 21:8

Be not terrified” – Luke 21:9

Be not faithless” – John 20:27

Be not highminded” – Romans 11:20

Be not conformed to this world” – Romans 12:2

Be not children in understanding” – I Corinthians 14:20

Be not drunk with wine” – Ephesians 5:18

Be not moved away from the hope of the gospel” – Colossians 1:23

Be not bitter” – Colossians 3:19

Be not weary in well doing” – II Thessalonians 3:13
